Overview
The aim of FOCUS K3D is to foster the comprehension, adoption and use of knowledge intensive technologies for coding and sharing 3D media content in consolidate and emerging application communities by:
- exploiting the scientific and technological advances in the representation of the semantics of 3D media to increase awareness of the new technologies for intelligent 3D content creation and management;
- building user-driven scenarios to evaluate and adapt the technologies so far developed to the requirements of application environments;
- foster a shift of role of 3D content users, from passive consumers of technologies to active creators.
In previous initiatives, like AIM@SHAPE, the role of user communities was limited because the emphasis was on building a new research field on the theme of semantics-oriented digital shape modelling. The dissemination actions were therefore mainly targeting the scientific community; the industrial community, even if involved via a specific interest group, could not be actively involved in the development of roadmaps for an effective deployment of the defined approaches in real application scenarios. This was far beyond the scope and duration of AIM@SHAPE.
FOCUS K3D will take the opposite view: specific application scenarios will be set up and for each of them specific dissemination and take-up actions will be coordinated to demonstrate that semantic 3D content can answer a number of open problems in the content production and processing chain in those domains.
MIRALab’s contribution
MIRALab is WP2 leader. This workpackage collects the activities of the four application-oriented working groups (AWGs), one for each identified application area: Medicine and Bioinformatics, Gaming and Simulation, CAD/CAE and Virtual Product Modelling, Archaeology and Cultural Heritage. MIRALab will also participate in conferences and organize workshops, specifically devoted to dissemintate widely the outcomes of the FOCUS K3D activities (AWG workshops outcomes, roadmaps) to the possibly interested communities.
